In 1954 the battered nude body of a young woman was found in a creek bed in Boulder, Colorado. She was buried as a Jane Doe. Authorities now know she was Dorothy Gay Howard, age 18, of Phoenix. The persistence of a local historian was a big part in the identification.
About five years ago the local police renewed efforts to identify the Jane Doe. Silvia Pettem, a local historian, persisted in prodding things along. Her curiosity came to the surface and she wrote a book called "Someone's Daughter, In Search Of Justice For Jane Doe." In 2004 the body was exhumed and a facial reconstruction done from the skull. DNA was extracted from the remains. A woman contacted the local police stating she was the great niece of a missing woman and supplied the name Dorothy Howard. Ms. Howard's younger sister is still alive and a DNA match was done providing a positive identification.
